Understanding Piles
Piles, also known as haemorrhoids and referred to as Arshas in Ayurveda, are swollen and enlarged veins in and around the anus or lower rectum. They may develop due to chronic constipation, repeated straining during bowel movements, prolonged sitting, pregnancy, or other factors that increase pressure in the rectal region. Piles may be internal or external and can cause considerable discomfort if left untreated.
Common Symptoms
Constipation and difficulty passing stools
Pain or discomfort in the anal region
Burning sensation during or after bowel movements
Itching or irritation around the anus
Swelling or a lump around the anal region
Bleeding during bowel movements in some cases
Difficulty sitting comfortably
The Ayurvedic Approach
Ayurvedic treatment for piles focuses on improving bowel movements, reducing constipation and relieving pain and discomfort while addressing the underlying digestive imbalance.
Depending on the type and severity of piles, treatment may include Ayurvedic internal medicines, dietary and lifestyle modifications, therapeutic tub baths (Sitz baths) and specialized treatments such as Kshara Sutra where appropriate. Kshara Sutra is a traditional Ayurvedic para-surgical procedure used for selected anorectal conditions and is performed only after proper clinical evaluation.
The overall approach also emphasizes adequate hydration, a fibre-rich diet and healthy bowel habits to help prevent recurrence.
